Our Top 5 Golf Courses in the UK

Golf is a favourite pastime for many people all around the world and is a very enjoyable and easy to play activity, no matter how good or bad you are. From driving ranges to links courses, there are many different ways to play and practice to get your shot perfectly on target. With golf being a passion of ours, we have come up with our top 5 golf courses in the UK. If you’re an avid golfer with a passion for the game as well as the history surrounding it, we recommend that you visit the below iconic courses which will make you fall in love with the game all over again.

#5 Royal Birkdale Golf Course

Coming in at number five is Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Southport, which was designed in 1889. While it is a links golf course, this particular course is very uncharacteristic to this genre of the game. To start with, the dunes – adding a superbly beautiful frame to the course and separation between each hole – are some of the grandest and most imposing in the Open rota. The fairways are also unusual for a links course; they’re some of the flattest around which would be ideal for those who golf with a push golf trolley. Links courses are usually characterised by waves of humps, hollows, and swales, so for this course to have barely a ripple is very uncommon. Don’t underestimate this as making the course easy, however, as the lack of texture seems to make up for the tough first and last holes on this course, which are regarded as some of the hardest in the Open. These holes are made difficult by the harsh winds from the sea and elevated tee areas, leaving your ball at risk of being skewed or made inaccurate by the gale force gusts.

#4 Sunningdale Golf Club

Our fourth favourite course is Sunningdale Golf Club, which is located in Berkshire and is definitely a beautiful one. With a serene setting, this course is as enjoyable to play as it is to appreciate. The recurrent splashes of colour, different varieties of terrain, and the way in which the holes blend into the landscape all set apart the Old Course at this club from similarly appointed courses around the world. The New Course at Sunningdale is similar in design to its counterpart but a bit more rugged with less tree-lined fairways and bunkering. Many believe the New Course to be a tougher test thanks to the narrow fairways and longer carries over the heathland. For the average golfer, this would be a great test and, thanks to the beautiful views, a great experience as well.

#3 Royal Dornoch Golf Club

Number three on our list of top 5 golf courses in the UK is Royal Dornoch Golf Club, which is situated up in the Highlands. This scenic course is arguably one of the finest and most beautiful to never have held an Open, which is surprising considering its fame and well-designed nature. Our favourite hole on this course has to be the 7th hole; not only is this a fun and entertaining hole to play, but it is also beautifully placed atop a ledge, allowing you to view the links in all of its astounding natural allure. With the varieties of altitudes at this club, we would recommend taking along an electric golf trolley to help you navigate the different terrains.

#2 St Georges

Taking second place is the breath-taking golf club called St George’s. The history behind this majestic links is what makes it feel so special. It is the first and most played course outside of Scotland that features in the Open Championship. Designed to be the St Andrew’s of the South East, the old-school design to this golf course is made clear by the sheer amount of pot bunkers and blind shots, making it a great challenge but an even greater experience. If you have the chance, you should definitely play a round or two here – it will be a game to remember.

#1 St. Andrew’s Old Course

Finally, we’ve reached our top spot in our review of top 5 golf courses in the UK. This should really come as no surprise considering that it is probably the most famous course in all of golf. St. Andrew’s Old Course takes the cake thanks to its iconic scenery, fascinating history, and amazing playability. The harsh winds coming off the sea and the intricate design of the course combine to create a golfing experience like no other. With an onsite hotel at the club and many in the surrounding area, it would also make the perfect holiday for those who are passionate about the game. Overall it is the most satisfying course that we have played on thanks to the rewarding feeling you get, even just from standing on the green. It is truly a special course and will always be our favourite.
